I am a ‘dreamer’ and I had a dream. Not as profound as Dr Martin Luther King, but one I decided to write down as a fictional novel. The nightmare of escaping. What would I take? How would I save my family, my animals? What thoughts went through the minds of people who needed to escape the threat of Fascism and war in Europe between 1939 and 1945.
I have been fascinated by the research I have done into the historical facts of WW2, as experienced by fleeing citizens and military personnel. The subsequent lives of refugees and evacuees in Britain are woven into the fictional story.

About The Book
Willup Hall is a war-time romance with children, adults, horses, dogs, humour and historical facts. It is a fictional family saga containing interesting reflections on life in war time Britian and on the Continent of Europe
Sublimely unaware of the looming crisis about to engulf the world and change her life The Honourable Cressida Makenna Welsby is told she must leave France for Britain to avoid the invasion by the Nazis. Unforeseen circumstances require her to drive home with her horse, dog and two teenage acquaintances escaping the impending war. On her journey she collects more escapees both human and animal.
Their journey takes them to Norfolk and this story is about their war. War makes ordinary people do extraordinary things, but it’s the ordinary people who carry on their ordinary lives who are the cement which creates the foundation which enables others to do extraordinary acts of bravery.
The saga begins before the war and explains why Cressida is in France. It continues in Norfolk during the war and tells of the live of evacuee children escaping from the bombing of British cities. It includes British, Jewish, Sikh, West Indian, and Moroccan refugees. It’s about journeys people were forced to make because of WW2 and the sanctuary they find at Willup Hall in Norfolk. This also becomes a relatively safe haven and place of recuperation for RAF personnel suffering burn out.
